Whatever happened to the faculty?: Knowledge transfer and the academic workforce in the U.S.

The U.S. component of the CINHEKS project will explore the extent to which there are distinctive contextual elements of historical patterns, policy discourse, and university practices in knowledge transfer in the U.S., as compared to European and Japanese societies. The aim is to empirically unpack and analytically capture significant aspects of social networks that shape knowledge transfer between higher education institutions and society.

There is a particular focus on the extent and manner in which professors feature in the social networks and policy discourse of networks that surround knowledge transfer in higher education institutions. The project will employ mixed methods in a multiple case study design focused on two policy levels (the federal and state), two policy sectors (research and education), three states (California, Michigan,
and New York),and six universities (two institutions in each state, a leading, globally oriented university and a more regionally institution). Discourse and archival data will be drawn on from key slices of time in knowledge transfer policy and practice dating from the Bayh-Dole act. Interview data focused on recent developments will be gathered as well.
