Adult competencies
The research interest of the team consists of adult competencies and their assessment. The adult competencies and skills create a basis for the renewal of the working life as well as for active citizenship. The topic is examined in the framework of lifelong learning and international assessment. The team is based on the possibilities offered by PIAAC (the OECD’s Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies), which studies the basic skills of adults (reading literacy, numeric skills, and ICT-based problem-solving skills). The team also examines different factors concerning lifelong learning. In addition to the PIAAC data, the team utilises also other data sets so as to identify new research problems related to adult competencies. The researchers have versatile expertise related to basic skills, their assessment, higher education studies, vocational education, and quantitative and qualitative methods. This diversified expertise provides a solid basis for the study of the wide and heterogeneous adult population’s competencies.
