April 1, 12:15-15:00, in Jyväskylä. Agora D211

“Explaining scholarly precariousness is not particularly challenging, nor difficult. The basic approaches, theory, methodology, and methods have existed for decades. The real challenge is impacting scholarly precariousness.” (Hoffman et al. 2015)

In honor of April Fool’s Day, anyone interested in contrasting policy-based-evidence, unquestioned assumptions, ungrounded personal opinions and unproblematized anecdotes with critical framing, theory, methodological choice and data is welcome to attend a facilitated discussion focused on ‘who benefits’ from perpetuating transnational scholarly precariousness, in general, and the way in which scholarly precariousness manifests within and across Finland’s higher education institutions in particular. Further, the linkages between scholarly precariousness and socioeconomic precarity will be explored.

This discussion will be facilitated by the authors of a recent ethnographic study focused on the causes and consequences contemporary scholarly precariousness, what – if anything – can be done about it and possible next steps.
