Citizenship education
The study examines citizenship education primarily in formal learning environments with their societal connections at different stages of education, from teacher education to primary education. Active citizenship, a growth goal for pupils and students presented by Finnish educational policy, is understood through the concepts of inclusion, participation and agency. One dimension of the study is to examine citizenship education from a point of view of cultural and ethnic diversities. Background knowledge has been gained by following-up and analyzing integration in Finnish educational policy. Intercultural processes in higher education from a pedagogical viewpoint
Currently, the study is focused on examining the development of interculturality of university students in the connection of their studies of a foreign language and culture. Earlier the study has examined conceptions of interculturality and cultural couching of students by a university teacher of a foreign language and culture as well as experiences of Finnish university teachers participating in an international academic exchange programme.
