Methods and methodologies in higher education research

Welcome to the third Summer School on Higher Education. This year’s theme is methods and methodologies in higher education research. The Summer School provides PhD students an opportunity to present and get feedback on their own research as well as meet senior researchers and other PhD students from the field of higher education research.

PhD students may receive credits for presenting a paper in the summer school. However, each student must negotiate this with their supervisor in advance. Recommended credit amount for participation is 3 ECTS credits. The summer school is intended for PhD students studying primarily in Finnish universities; participation is free of charge. Accommodation is free of charge for the members of the Consortium of the Higher Education Researchers in Finland, CHERIF. You can find information on joining CHERIF from https://ktl.jyu.fi/summerschool2016/join. The CHERIF annual membership fee is 20€.

Key note speaker Teresa Carvalho is an Assistant Professor in University of Aveiro, the Department of Social, Political and Territorial Sciences and a senior researcher in CIPES - Center for Research in Higher Education, Portugal. Her research interests are related to New Public Management, sociology of professions, gender and academic career. Carvalho will also comment the PhD students' papers in the summer school. 

Dr Oili-Helena Ylijoki is a Senior Researcher in the Research Center for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, TaSTI, University of Tampere. Her research interests are related to academic cultures and researcher identities, time studies and higher education studies. 

Dr Susanna Paloniemi is a senior researcher in a Department of Education in University of Jyväskylä. She has been involved in many big research projects conducted in the Department of Education and she will spread her knowledge about the project management and different methods used in the projects. Paloniemi will be teaching in the Summer School's evening seminar on Thursday. 

Important dates:

  • The deadline for the applications is May 15th 2016.
  • Applicants will be notified of acceptance by May 31st 2016.
  • The participants are asked to submit the full papers by July 31st 2016.
